Pościelami posługujemy się od zawsze. Ludzie pierwotni do okrywania się stosowali skóry zabitych zwierząt. Po pojawieniu się zwierząt gospodarskich oraz różnego typu materiałów, zaczęto wykorzystywać skóry owcze oraz puch i pierze ptaków wodnych. Pojawiły się wtedy pierwsze pierzyny i kołdry puchowe. Z uwagi na wysoką cenę orginalnego puchu, uboższe warstwy społeczeństwa jako wypełnienie stosowały pierze gęsie, kacze lub kurze. Natomiast pościele puchowe używane były przez zamożne osoby.

Puch i pierze którym wypełniano kołdry puchowe i pierzyny, pozyskiwano w wyniku podskubu ptaków gospodarskich. Uzyskane pierze należało ręcznie posegregować na puch i pierze oraz, w przypadku pierza, oddzielić piórka(chorągiewki) od twardych gałązek (stosin). Najczęściej zajmowały się tym kobiety i dziewczęta, podczas jesiennych lub zimowych wieczorów. Wspólne skubanie pierza, oprócz wzajemnej pomocy, stanowiło równocześnie formę życia towarzyskiego.
